CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Nash

It’s been two weeks since I last saw Jody.

I returned to the room an hour later from my nightcap. She was clothed and passed out.

Fuck. I wanted her that night—wanted to take what she was offering—but she wasn’t in the right frame of mind for us to have sex.

It took everything for me to walk away from her beautiful body. It’s not that I didn’t want her. I did. Just not that way.

After we got back, I reached out to her mom and explained that Jody probably wouldn’t want her coworkers at her birthday party.

Hell. She probably didn’t want me there. She didn’t talk to me the whole ride home.

She’s probably thanking her lucky stars I didn’t take advantage of her. That’s what it would’ve been.

Jody’s not the type of person who likes to mix business with pleasure. Or friends with sex. That’s another reason I didn’t sleep with her. I knew she’d regret it the next day.

I pull up to the Walker’s driveway and head inside.

Her mom is in the kitchen, dumping chips into a bowl.

“Theodore.” She smiles. “Glad you could make it, and thanks again for letting me know about Jody’s coworkers. I thought about it. She wouldn’t want something big, so I kept it small. Oh, here, can you take this outside.” She hands me the bowl. “She’s in the backyard.”

“Sure.” I smile at her and make my way out the door, stopping dead in my tracks when I see my friend who has ignored me for the past two weeks.

She’s leaning against the fence with some huge-ass dude standing close to her. Too close. Muscles ripple over his broad, tanned shoulders. He’s got to be half a foot taller than my six feet.

My hand tightens on the bowl. Not taking my eyes from her, I walk it over to the picnic table and set it down.

She spots me. Her eyes remain with me for a second before she repositions a smile on her face and turns her attention back to the guy.

“That’s Trent,” Aiden says, standing beside me drinking a beer. “He’s cool.” He shrugs. “Want a beer?” He lifts the bottle.

No. I want to know more about fucking Trent.

“Yeah.” I nod and turn to him. He’s swaying. “How many have you had?”

“A lot.” He grins. “I only have two more days, and then I gotta head back to college. So I’m making the most of it.” He laughs.

“What? No partying at school? Isn’t that what college is all about?”

“Not when your mom’s working a second job to pay for it.”

“Yeah,” I say as he heads back inside the house.

Wow, he’s growing up fast.

I know Jody and Aiden offered to pay for their schooling themselves, but Mrs. Walker insists on taking care of it. She’s a determined woman.

That’s where Jody gets it from.

Aiden is twenty now. I think he was the “let’s save the marriage” kid. One year after he was born, their dad walked out on them and never looked back. Joe told people he was dead.
